#089 Unplanned Maintenance: 31.10.2011, 13:00 ? 14:00 CEST VMware Cloud Server replacement

As a result of VMware Cloud system-maintenance we will replace two hardware servers in our VMware Cloud Hosting Cluster#7 in our Milan datacenter requested by an hardware failure occurred today. Since our VMware Cloud Hosting platform is powered by VMware HA and VMware vMotion features no customer has been affected by this failure and no customer will be annoied during this maintenance.  The replacement will start on the 31.10.2011 at 13:00 and will be completed on 31.10.2011 at 14:00.

This maintenance concerns :
- VMware Cloud Hosting Cluster#7based in Milan.

This maintenance do not concerns :

- Other VMware Cloud Hosting Clusters
- VMware Dedicated Hosting already upgraded with VMware vSphere
- Colocation and Housing
- IP-Transit, Ethernet Services, MPLS and VPN services

NOTE: Just in case a Virtual Machine reboot is needed and to let our technician be able to soft reboot the guest OS, all the Virtual Machines needs to have VMware Tools installed and upgraded. All unManaged VMware customers are pleased to install the VMware Tools ro upgrade it to the last version. #085 Planned Maintenance: 10.07.2011, 10:00 ? 13:00 CEST E-commerce Maintenance

As a result of software-upgrades in our DNS E-Commerce module, our OnLine E-commerce services for Domain Name provisioning could be temporarely unavailable. The upgrades will start on the 10.07.2011 at 10:00 CEST and will be completed at 13:00 CEST.

We expect a set of 4 – 6 short, intermittent interruptions in service during the three hour window. Each interruption will last for a couple of minutes.

DNS services are not object of this maintenance.

Planned downtime : 4 – 6 short over a period of 3 hours

Of course we’ll try to keep the outages as short as possible.

Should we encounter any problems during the maintenance, we will
postpone the remaining upgrades to a later date, which of course will be
announced before. Please be also aware, that the timetable may vary a
bit in case of unpredictable delays.

#082 Planned Maintenance: 19.08.2010, 00:01 ? 05:00 CEST European Backbone Upgrade

As a result of software-upgrades in our European backbone infrastructure,
services at the according locations could be temporarely unavailable. The
upgrades will start on the 19.08.2010 at 00:01 and will be completed at 06:00.

This maintenance concerns all Colocation, IP-transit, VMware Cloud Hosting,
Dedicated Hosting, MPLS, VPLS, SDH links and VLAN-customers at the specific
locations.

Below you can find the list for the outages at the specific
locations:

ZH1: ICT Center ZH, Zürich Josefstrasse
MI1: Interoute, Caldera

Planned downtime : 20Mins

Of course we’ll try to keep the outages as short as possible.

#068 Cogent Packet Loss in Zurich

This post is about of Incident #098, relating high packet loss from some part of the Cogent network.

Details:

  • Date/Time: The issue started at approximately 01:55 PM June 2 2010.
  • Symptoms: Some customer is affected by high packet loss.
  • Impact: This affect our Cogent IP-Transit in Europe.
  • Root Cause: Cogent just confirmed they are having a heavy dDoS attack in Zurich. They are working on this issue to solve it ASAP.
  • Takeaways: we were updated by Cogent at 02:05 CEST that they are managing the dDoS and mitigated it on their backbone ingress ports. All traffic has been rerouted to other transit carrier on our Engine Networks Backbone BGP routers.

#064 Planned Maintenance: 14.05.2010, 20:00 ? 15.05.2010 12:00 CEST VMware Cloud Upgrade

As a result of software-upgrades from VMware ESX3.5 to the new VMware vSphere (formerly ESX4) in our VMware Cloud Hosting platform and infrastructure, customers VMware Virtual Machines and VMware Dedicated Host servers at the according locations could be temporarely unavailable for nearly 15/30mins.  The upgrades will start on the 14.05.2010 at 20:00 and will be completed on 15.05.2010 at 12:00.

This maintenance concerns :
- VMware Cloud Hosting Cluster#1, Cluster#3 and Cluster#5 based in Zurich.
- VMware Cloud Hosting Cluster#2, Cluster#4, Cluster#6 based in Geneva.
- VMware Dedicated Hosting based in Zurich and Geneva.

This maintenance do not concerns :

- VMware Cloud Hosting Clusters based in Milan
- VMware Dedicated Hosting based in Milano
- VMware Dedicated Hosting already upgraded with VMware vSphere
- Colocation and Housing
- IP-Transit, Ethernet Services, MPLS and VPN services

Each customer Virtual Machine needed to be rebooted twice or three times to let our technicians update Virtual Machines to VMware vSphere Virtual Machine. Each reboot could not need more then few minutes.
Please, notice that reboot could be not consecutive and could be spanned across the maintenance time window. Anyway, activities will not be longer then 15/30mins for each Virtual Machine.

NOTE: No hard reboot will be done on Customer Virtual Machines. To let our technician be able to soft reboot the guest OS, all the Virtual Machines needs to have VMware Tools installed and upgraded. upgrades will start on the 30.11.2009 at 00:01 and willbe completed at 06:00.

This maintenance concerns all Colocation, IP-transit, VMware Cloud Hosting,
Dedicated Hosting, MPLS, SDH links and VLAN-customers at the specific
locations.

#049 TelecomItalia/Sparkle fiber-cuts in France and Italy

This post is a summary of Incident #049, relating to service unavailability from some part of the Seabon/TelecomItalia network.

Details:

  • Date/Time: The issue started at approximately 17:00 PM September 15 2009 and was fully resolved.
  • Symptoms: Some customer residing in Italy has been affected by high packet loss.
  • Impact: This will affected none of our three DataCenters.
  • Root Cause: Telecom Italia just confirmed they are having a big fault (fiber cut) in France (2 cuts) and one Milano. This was confirmed also by the Telecom Italia Sparkle (SEABONE) NOC. They are working on this issue to solve it ASAP.
  • Takeaways: All problems solved; we were updated by Telecom Italia at 04:52 CET that the fiber-cuts have been restored, both in Milano Chiasso and Marseille Vernegues and that the circuits are up and running fine..

#045 Zurich Network Availability

This post is a summary of Incident #045, relating to service unavailability for some part of the Zurich network.

Details:

  • Date/Time: The issue started at approximately 7:30PM on Thursday, September 17 2009 and was fully resolved by about 00:30AM on Friday, September 18 2009 Central European Solar Time.
  • Symptoms: Some customer residing in our Zurich DataCenter would have experienced network unavailability to the server.
  • Impact: This affected some customers on Zurich DataCenter. Customers residing on different DataCenter were unaffected.
  • Root Cause: BGP4 flapping. One router started to Flap BGP4 session drive down some of our Networks.
  • Takeaways: Both Boarder routers has been checked, fibers cable connected to carriers has been replaced.
  • The odds of a recurrence are minimal.
